INTIMACY REWIRED™ FOR COUPLES
You can love each other—and still feel caught in patterns that make closeness difficult.
Therapeutic relationship coaching and sexology-informed support for partners who want to understand what is happening between them, communicate more openly, and create a relationship where intimacy, desire and emotional safety can grow together.
Monogamous, consensually non-monogamous and relationship-questioning partnerships are equally welcome.
Perhaps this feels familiar
You may care deeply about each other and still find yourselves having different versions of the same painful conversation.
You may find yourselves:
repeating the same conflict without reaching genuine understanding or repair
caught in a pattern where one partner seeks closeness while the other withdraws, shuts down or needs space
loving and caring for each other, yet feeling emotionally or sexually distant
functioning well as a team but no longer feeling like lovers
struggling with differences in desire, initiation, sexual frequency or what intimacy means to each of you
carrying hurt after betrayal, secrecy, rejection or a loss of trust
finding it difficult to discuss needs, boundaries, fantasies or relationship agreements without the conversation escalating
exploring monogamy, consensual non-monogamy or a change in relationship structure—and wanting space to understand what genuinely fits
These difficulties do not automatically mean that your relationship is broken or that you have chosen the wrong person.
Often, partners become caught in a protective cycle. Each person’s response may make sense on its own, yet together those responses can create more distance, defensiveness or misunderstanding.
The aim is not to decide who is right or steer you towards any particular relationship structure. It is to help you understand what is happening between you, communicate more honestly and begin creating a relationship in which closeness, autonomy, intimacy and desire have room to exist.
Love and insight do not always change the pattern
You may both understand what keeps going wrong. You may have discussed it many times, promised to communicate differently and genuinely intended to respond with more care. Yet when the familiar moment arrives, the same reactions can take over.
This is because relationship patterns do not live only in what we think or say. They can also be held in rapid protective responses: pursuing, withdrawing, defending, pleasing, shutting down or trying to resolve everything immediately.
One partner may reach harder because distance feels frightening. The other may pull away because pressure feels overwhelming. Each response makes sense from the inside, but together they can create the very disconnection both partners fear.
Desire can become caught in the pattern too. Unresolved hurt, pressure, rejection, obligation or fear of disappointing one another can make physical intimacy feel increasingly complicated—even when love and attraction have not disappeared.
The pattern is the problem—not either of you.
The work begins by slowing the cycle down, understanding what lies beneath each person’s response and creating new ways of meeting one another when vulnerability, difference or desire enters the room.
Working beneath the pattern
Our work creates space to explore not only what you disagree about, but what happens between you when closeness, difference, vulnerability and desire enter the room.
Depending on what is bringing you here, areas we may explore together include:
recurring conflict and the patterns that make repair difficult
communication, emotional safety and expressing needs more clearly
pursuing, withdrawing, defensiveness and other protective responses
rebuilding trust after hurt, secrecy, betrayal or disconnection
differences in desire, initiation, sexual frequency and the meaning each of you gives to intimacy
reconnecting with touch, pleasure, playfulness and erotic connection
boundaries, autonomy and remaining connected to yourself within the relationship
navigating life changes, stress or transitions that have altered the relationship between you
non-monogamy exploration—including conversations about opening a relationship, agreements, jealousy, new relationship energy, autonomy, sexual health and changing needs
This is reflective and therapeutic work, but it is also practical. We may slow down a difficult conversation, notice what each of you is protecting, practise expressing a need differently or explore ways of rebuilding emotional and physical connection outside the sessions.
The aim is not to preserve a relationship at any cost or push you towards a predetermined outcome. It is to create enough honesty, understanding and emotional safety for you to discover what your relationship needs—and what feels genuinely right for the people within it.
Therapeutic depth, grounded in real relationships
Not every conflict means that two people are incompatible. And not every difficulty with intimacy can be solved by communicating better, scheduling a date night or trying harder to have sex.
My approach brings together sexology, attachment-informed therapeutic coaching, mindfulness and practical experience of how people connect, protect themselves and lose—or rediscover—contact with one another.
At times, we may explore how earlier experiences shape what each of you expects from closeness, conflict or desire. At other times, the work may be very practical: preparing for a difficult conversation, interrupting a familiar argument, rebuilding touch without pressure or creating clearer relationship agreements.
Relationship patterns and repair
We explore the cycle that develops between you—what activates it, what each person is protecting and what helps you return to connection after conflict or distance.
Desire, sexuality and the body
Sexual difficulties rarely exist in isolation. We can explore desire, pleasure, touch, initiation, rejection, body connection and the emotional conditions that allow intimacy to feel safer and more alive.
Communication and real-life change
Insight becomes meaningful when it changes what happens between you. We translate what emerges in sessions into clearer conversations, different responses and practices that support connection in everyday life.
A process shaped around your relationship
The work is collaborative rather than prescriptive. I will not decide who is right, tell you what your relationship should look like or assume that monogamy is the only valid form of commitment. We begin with what is happening now and create a process that respects each person—and the relationship you are trying to understand.
Ways we can work together
Many couples arrive with one concern in mind: communication, conflict, trust, sex or a decision about their relationship structure. Once we look more closely, that concern may connect with wider patterns involving emotional safety, attachment, autonomy, intimacy or desire.
Intimacy Rewired™ for Couples is the core process and is generally the most appropriate choice when the difficulty is recurring, longstanding or connected to several areas of the relationship.
Focused Reconnection is offered when the situation is clearly defined and a shorter, contained process is likely to provide meaningful support.
For couples seeking a longer and more closely supported process, a limited Intimacy Rewired™ Couples Private option is also available by application.
You do not need to work out which pathway is right for you alone. During our complimentary introductory call, we can consider what is happening between you and which level of support would be the most appropriate fit.

About Miia
I’m Miia Koponen, a sexologist and therapeutic relationship coach.
Before moving into therapeutic work, I spent more than 15 years working in the dating and matchmaking industry in London. I saw what brings people together—but also that attraction and love alone do not teach us how to remain connected when vulnerability, difference, routine or disappointment enter a relationship.
That experience still shapes how I work. I am less interested in deciding who is right than in helping you understand the pattern developing between you—and what each person may be trying to protect, express or reach for within it.
My approach brings together sexology, attachment-informed therapeutic coaching, mindfulness and practical relationship experience. It is warm, collaborative and honest. There is space for complexity, sexuality, ambivalence, different needs and relationships that do not follow a conventional script.
I work online in English and Finnish with partners in Finland and internationally.

Frequently asked questions
-
You do not need to decide this alone.
Intimacy Rewired™ for Couples is the natural starting point when concerns feel recurring, interconnected or established over time. Focused Reconnection is designed for a clearly defined situation that appears suitable for a shorter, contained process. Intimacy Rewired™ Couples Private offers a longer and more closely supported engagement for couples seeking a bespoke level of support.
During the complimentary introductory call, we can discuss what is happening and consider which starting point feels most appropriate.
-
It is common for partners to arrive with different levels of confidence, urgency or readiness. You do not need to feel exactly the same about beginning.
Both partners do, however, need to be willing to participate and curious enough to explore what is happening between you. The introductory call gives you both an opportunity to ask questions and experience my approach without pressure to continue.
-
No. Couples seek support for many reasons: recurring conflict, emotional distance, changes in desire, difficulty communicating, questions about relationship agreements or simply a sense that something important has become harder to reach.
Some couples come during a painful period. Others begin because they want to understand their relationship more deeply and address a pattern before it becomes more established.
-
Yes. I welcome monogamous, consensually non-monogamous, polyamorous and relationship-questioning partners.
Our work may include exploring whether to open a relationship, agreements and boundaries, jealousy, new relationship energy, autonomy, sexual health or changing needs. I do not treat monogamy as the only valid form of commitment or steer you towards a particular relationship structure.
The programme we choose reflects the depth of support needed—not your relationship structure.
-
Couples Private is a bespoke, longer-term engagement for partners seeking greater continuity and more closely supported work.
Depending on your needs, it may include an extended programme of sessions, a personalised Relationship & Intimacy Roadmap, structured review points, integration summaries, curated resources and priority between-session voice-note or email support within agreed boundaries.
I work with only a small number of Private clients at a time. The scope, timeframe and fee are agreed together before the work begins.
-
No. This is therapeutic relationship coaching and sexology-informed support rather than psychotherapy, psychiatric care or medical treatment.
The work can be emotionally meaningful and may explore established relationship patterns, attachment, intimacy, sexuality and past experiences. If it appears that either of you would benefit from specialist psychological, psychiatric or medical support, I will discuss this with you openly.
-
Joint work requires enough safety for both partners to speak honestly and participate freely.
Where there is ongoing violence, coercion, intimidation or fear of the consequences of speaking openly, joint sessions may not be an appropriate or safe setting. In those circumstances, individual or specialist support should be considered first.
-
Sessions are held online by secure video call. You can join from Finland or internationally, and we can work in English or Finnish.
Please choose a private space where you can both speak openly without interruption. Standard couples sessions are 70 minutes, with potentially longer Discovery Session included in Intimacy Rewired™ for Couples.
-
Yes. Payment options are available for Intimacy Rewired™ for Couples and can be discussed during the introductory call.
Focused Reconnection is normally paid as one programme fee. The structure and payment arrangement for Couples Private are agreed individually before beginning.
You do not need to know exactly how to change the pattern.
If something on this page has felt familiar, we can begin with a conversation.
During a complimentary 30-minute introductory call, you can tell me a little about what is happening, ask questions and get a sense of whether my approach feels right for you. We can also consider which level of support would be the most appropriate place to begin.
Where possible, I recommend that both partners attend.
Online support in English and Finnish.
